Between 2019 and 2022 I had a weekly podcast where I played back and discussed old phone answering machine messages. In the late 1980s, while living in Chicago, I selected certain messages to be duplicated using a double cassette recorder. In cases where the caller is identified, I received permission to play back their messages, and when possible I interviewed the person who left the message about their memories from the past. The podcast presents personal history and the larger social and cultural context through the lens of an outdated technology.
